til my fountain pen runs dry

Inspector Endeavour Morse

This drawing is partly a gift for my, ridiculously young, friend's 21st birthday and partly a thank you for all of his help and hard work in setting up my exhibition earlier this year.

For some reason the scan of this portrait hasn't done it any favours. I found the same with the cat and dog portraits. The cross hatching looks quite flat. I don't know. Plus, I was way out of my comfort zone with this subject matter. But, for my first attempt at an 'orse I'm rather pleased, and so was his owner.

Oh, you should be really pleased! I would wish to have a drawing like that of my horse too. It´s beautiful!

I might just be a silent lurker most of the time, but I do love your work!

As for your scanner, some of those contraptions really benefit from having at least part of the image white (for baseline calibration). Perhaps you could try increasing the scan area when you work with a document with a colored background like this, so as to include some white surface. Just crop this unwanted area out of the final image. Might help, might not, but doesn't cost much to try. Good luck.

Scans and photos of drawings/paintings of black animals never turn out as good as the original for some reason - but this still looks terrific. Love that knowing look!

Lovely 'orse Andrea, :) cross hatching looks lovely. When I scan certain things, ie, black and white and greys etc, I use a sheet of acetate(thin, like photocopiers take) over the artwork, and for some reason it picks up more detail. It's essential I've found, hope you find so too! Best wishes, Jules.

the title of this post reminds me of the project we did in high school with one pen called Draw Til You Drop. It was fun, I've always wanted to do it again but have never gotten around to it.

Thanks, guys.

Julie, that's a great tip about acetate. I'd never have thought of it in a million years. Treb, thanks too.

Tine, I'm sure that could be arranged!

Cheers.

Supper interesting, what pen / marker are you using for such fine line?
